The Burke was a steam hopper barge, it was built in 1884, the South Australian Government in Adelaide commissioned the building of her. It was then purchased by the Melbourne Harbor Trust in 1889.
- Length: 39 m
- Beam 9.14 m
- Draught 2.9 m
- Weight: 183 tons net and 345 tons gross
It had two compound steam engines, the hopper barge Burke worked in dredging operations around Port Phillip for nearly 50 years before and was scuttled in the ships graveyard in 1935.
It now sits in around 50M of water and the main superstructure in-tact. The bow is quite prominent with an abundance of fish life. There is no real penetration areas on the Burke.
On the day the photos were taken it was only around 2M visibility, but it does suggest it would be a lovely dive in clearer conditions.
